The Holiday Edition Change of Shift
Welcome to the holiday edition of Change of Shift! I hope this edition finds each of you warm, safe, full of your favorite holiday beverage (mine’s called a Junebug, and it’s neon-green, as any good drink should be) and surrounded by your friends and family. I’m pleased and honored to be hosting this week’s edition; thanks to Kim over at Emergiblog, who we all know and love, for letting me throw my hat in! Now, without further ado, here goes nothing!
We’ll start over in the UK where The Oracle went from student nurse to patient. Never an easy switch, but definitely one that brings compassion to our practice. Of course, it never hurts to have a good lookin’ physician taking care of you, either. Get well soon, Oracle!
What about identies in the hospital? Titles are ever changing and it’s hard to know what to call whom, not to mention the possibility of identity theft. Julia over at This Won’t Hurt a Bit explores this phenomenon in her post, appropriately called “Titles.”
Attention all nursing students! It seems that we are plagued with constant fretting and freaking on how to answered the dreaded question on what to do when we graduate. Alternative Nursing Careers may have some information for you! I just love how this profession is filled with such amazing flexibility and options. Additionally, if you’re even thinking of going to nursing school, you ought to check out this post on “Before You Decided to Become a Nurse.”
Speaking of nursing students (or rather, graduates), congratulations goes out to Nurse Sean who has just completed his first year out of nursing school. He reflects on his time in a post entitled “Would You Recommend Becoming a Nurse?” Very eloquent. Would you?
Moving on, Lost on the Floor describes “Just Another Night” to us in her incredibly detailed post. Anyone need to know what a nurse does? Check this out; you get a great picture.
It’s sometimes hard to imagine a nurse outside of the hospital, kind of like the awkward feeling you got when you met your teacher in the grocery store. Amazingly enough, it does happen, and nurses have lives, and even families outside of their work. Some of them even have babies! Sandy has written a really informative article about “Trying to Have a Baby” that can be applied to both patients and nurses, alike. Terry over at Counting Sheep also discusses the phenomenon of obesity and how it can affect a patient’s surgical experience. For more ways on improving yourself (and maybe your patients, along the way) check out this post on “Brain Training.”
Most people know that career nursing can really jack your sleep schedule, regardless of what shift you work. Consider the title of this next post: “Insomnia Central.” Need I say more? I think we’ve all made the late night grocery store run at least once. Ok, maybe more than that…
Finally, here’s an interesting post from a social worker (yes, they have patients, too!) on Internet pornography. (Wonder what kind of google searches I’m going to get from that phrase!) You can click the link. I promise it’s safe.
That wraps up this hodgepodge of blog posts for the holiday edition of Change of Shift. I wish you all a fantastic, healthy New Year.
